EMAIL material TO se@se.unisa.edu.au

GUIDELINES for All material submitted

PURPOSE

There are many zines on the Internet covering everything imaginable. Therefore, this zine is specialized for the University of South Australia students and staff and as a reference to Adelaide, the surrounding suburbs and the State of South Australia.

CREATIVE MATERIAL

All creative material, from poetry to cyber-art, will be accepted from the University's students and staff. This is a general guideline and there may be exceptions to involve other's work in the Adelaide community.

Submit work to se@se.unisa.edu.au or to my office - room 2 in the transportable at the Magill Campus before Thursday 9AM and it will appear by five PM on Thursday. (phone: (08) 830 24735 fax: (08) 830 24723 ) Art work needs to be either in .jpg. or .gif format unless a link is provided to a site where it is. Please edit your own work, as it will appear as is. Some writings intentionally mis-spell or wreck havoc with grammar, my computer does not have intuition software and humans and computers really have different worldviews.

1. PLEASE say what area your material is to go in (i.e. Textuality - poetry). PLEASE give a name to your material (whatever you want to refer to yourself as). Material sent needs to have an ***@unisa.edu.au address. As all students and staff have an email account here it will be my way of verifying that you are part of the university.

2. If your work is hypertextual with many pages, I will only put up the first page or introduction. The links will go to your own sites. The same with any cyber-art, I can put up a thumbnail of your work but a link to the enlargement needs to go to a site you control.

3. Copyright is yours. Please say so on your work. Opinions and images are yours, and not reflective of the university, me or the server (which is the university).

4. Work will be archived so please name and date your presentation as it will have its own url (for seven years as is the ethics requirements for my Ph.D. please see ETHICS section 4). Be happy with your presentation. I will not change it in the future if you decide it needs re-working. If you believe you will amend your presentation or change it later have it on your own site and I will link to it. Use one of the hundreds of freeservers on the Internet. There are more than one-hundred places which will give a free homepage listed at freeservers - they are constantly adding to their list and have a bulletin board and a news section which lists the almost daily new services which will provide free pages. I am not suggesting any of the free servers, though I have pages on more than one hundred servers now, but as some tend to go out of business within a few months. The ones I have found to last the longest are Angelfire.com, Geocities.com, fortunecity.com and Tripod.com. I have had pages on them for more than three years. They are all about the same, all offer free e-mail and about 10 to 25 megabytes of space, all for free. Most tend to have annoying pop-up ads, except for Angelfire, which only has it on their index page. Some have names that may be of interest: BigAssWeb, bitchgoddess, graffiti and etc. They all have different rules and are easy to setup in, so check them out. Otherwise get a page through a paid service.

THE AREAS (click any of the underlined words to go to that area)

example: NAME/DATE/TITLE/EXPLANATION/STAFF OR STUDENT

Bubba, Happy. Prof. (9-9-99) "Nuclear serial cereals, and why they are yummy" This is a group of poems I wrote whist watching Neighbors and eating breakfast last night. (I am a senior lecturer in physics at the Levels campus)

That is what would appear in the index. It will link to the page with your poems or stories or whatever. If you also have a homepage include links to it from your material. You must provide an email address, if you do not want people contacting you personally then use one of the many free email services. I will not put your uni email address on your page unless you give permission. I will save all emails regarding your material for the seven-year period required by the university.

Reviews

This is the same as in any other format. Whether it is a film, exhibition etc. Whether you are a professional critic, reviewer or a student everyone has opinions, insights and you may see something differently than anyone else. Reviews will be indexed by dates and title. Films, plays, exhibitions that are in town at present will be at the top of the list. For films there is no need to say where it is playing, however for plays venues need to be stated. Whether it is at the Playhouse, the local church hall or at a theater and the date seen and how long it is running for need to be at the top of the review please.

example:

"The night of the Butterfly" playing at the Showground amphitheater August 10, 1999 to August 10, 2055. Reviewed by David Letterman, School of Communication (Honours student) The link would be from the title "The day of the Butterfly", as there could be several reviews of this one particular play. The same format will be used for movies and exhibitions.

Event-REVIEWS

The same as above. Reviews and previews. Whether you want to write an essay on an upcoming world event, or write on something which has already happened in the community, this is the place. There is no style for presentation, no ideological stance no editing, though originality, insights, unusualness will attract readers to other reviews you may choose to write. You may even be 'discovered' (see anti-heroes below). However, any work that is just outright offensive, slanderous or negative will not appear in southernexpressway.

WEEKLY UPDATES

I hope this will be the best and most popular section of southernexpressway.

Letters, style, Features, your great-grandmother's favourite tofu recipe. This will have a weekly index. Feel free to start your own weekly column here. Your unique viewpoint of current affairs, commercials or life in general may be the source of other's inspiration (see anti-heroes below).

Anti-Heroes

What this means is up to the writer. This section comes about as my partner/girlfriend is always going on about how people are put up on pedestals (sports, actors, politicians, gurus, [men she says], some men I say and etc.) and no one should be. We really don't need another hero, or someone to follow or emulate but there are those who do and there are those who enjoy being looked up to, let us find a place for both of them. Humor is a good way to tackle this topic.

WhoIsInTown

This comes about from the frustration of hearing someone was in town speaking or in concert or just visiting and I didn't know about it until after they left. For example, little did we know that Mark McQuire was in town until the Advertiser put his picture on the front page last year and I saw it after he left town. (OK bad example - Mark hit 71 homers last year for St. Louis, passing Babe Ruth's hundred year old record of 60 - so we can give that a miss - maybe he could be written up in the antihero section, though I must say I admire his accomplishments, and he surely made the headlines in the States - others would say "71 runs in the whole year? Lots of cricket players get that many runs in a game...")

Ask A Question

Ask a question and hopefully someone will have the answer. If providing an answer please say who you are. We all have valid thoughts but some answers coming from a professor may be more useful than a first-year student just as some answers may be better from an 18 year-old instead of a professor of the last 55-years. I would rather hear what the nightclub Cartoons is like from my teenagers than from an aging parent with teenagers. Just as I would rather hear what another parent said about how to act around one's teenagers after a night at Cartoons than from a teenager.

The other sections are as they say and are open to anyone in the community to contribute. Any event, any service any anything, which may be of interest to the uni population or to others in the community or to visitors to South Australia.

Nightclubs, restaurants, parties whatever - have your say.

And most importantly visit the CHAT areas so I can analyzed your conversation and write my thesis about it.

OH - southernexpressway is an ad-free zine zone. Anyone offering specials for uni students, such as two for one tickets or discount tickets or even free tickets will be thanked. This is the limit of promotion and sponsorship. southernexpressway chooses to be a gathering place for creative people and those who wish to know what is going on in town. There is enough advertisement everywhere already. This is an oasis from that out there.

In by 9 up by 5. Thursdays. Weather and moon signs are for Thursday to Sunday. This is due to the fact that southernexpressway exists only in a four-day week dimension, though it may be read on those other days, it officially does not recognize their right to exist. This may be changed by United Nations decree in the future but at this time. No. Oh. If there is an event on those other days, or a visitor of note (see anti-heroes) - yes they will be listed and commented on but only if the material is in by 9 Am Thursday. Due to southernexpressway's firm belief that there are only four days in its week, no editing will be done on those other days.

Volunteers from UNISA are welcome to help with the establishment and running of southernexpressway.

This zine is new, just born (July 1999), and as such it will need many months to become the best of the best which is its ultimate destiny.
